How Organizing My Home Helped My Anxiety (and Changed My Life)
I know what you’re thinking…
“She’s just always been organized.”
This will surprise you.
I didn’t start an organizing business because I was “good at organizing.” My nickname as a kid was “Hurricane Korinna” because I was known for making a mess.
Sweet. I know.
I started an organizing business because when Covid hit, my husband and I both had to work from home in a one-bedroom apartment—and I started having panic attacks.
I’d walk into the house, kick shoes out of the doorway, and feel so overstimulated that I couldn’t even form a sentence to my husband. Then I’d try to pull a pan out of the cabinet, everything would come crashing down, and I’d find myself screaming under my breath.
Then, storming out of the room crying.
It got to the point where my husband said to me, “You need to get help.”
So, me being me, I sought out an energy healer.
She told me I was highly sensitive and asked,
“Do you have a lot of stuff everywhere in your house? With you and your husband working from home in a small space, the mess could be triggering you and making you overwhelmed.”
What the heck?? I almost didn’t believe her.
But I was willing to try anything holistic, so I started getting rid of things I didn’t need.
A snowboard I broke my wrist on five years earlier—but “I spent a lot of money on it.”
Body lotions and skincare products that my sensitive skin couldn’t handle anymore, but they looked pretty, so I kept them.
Blankets from my old full-size bed that I was saving “just in case someone slept over”—which hadn’t happened in five years.
Clothes from when I was a size 4 that made me feel bad about my weight every single time I opened my closet.
Over the next six months, I went through and organized every area of my apartment. And things in my life really started to change.
I started working out regularly and lost almost 20 pounds.
My skin cleared up.
I stopped snapping at my husband for “no reason” the second I walked in the door.
I got a promotion and a raise at work.
I quit my 5pm wine habit.
I organized my home—and not only did my anxiety disappear, but I was finally happy.
I felt like I had unlocked the key to creating a life that actually felt good to live. And I wanted everyone to feel this way.
Over the last four years, my Align Your Shelf team and I have worked in over 300 homes, across multiple states, and grown into a team of six.
We’ve seen firsthand how quickly life can change when your space finally supports you.
When a spare bedroom “catch-all room” becomes an office you actually want to work in.
When you start eating better because everything in your kitchen has a place.
When your relationship, sleep, and even your s*x life improve because your bedroom is calm and clear.
